The History Behind Black Forest Cake RecipesWikipedia.org defines Black Forest Cake Recipes as having originated in the Black Forest region of southern Germany where they are referred to as Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (literally "Black Forest Cherry Cake"). Typically, Black Forest Cake Recipes consist of several layers of chocolate cake, with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. These layers are topped with additional whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chocolate shavings. In some European traditions sour cherries are used both between the layers and for decorating the top. Traditionally, the cake is saturated with Kirschwasser (cherry brandy), although other liquors are also used (rum is common in Austrian recipes). In the USA, Black Forest Cake is most often prepared without alcohol. We've included two different recipes for you to try...one being a bit more complicated than the other. You decide which one you prefer. Our thanks go out to Christine for the cake photo. Her hubby...yes, that's right...made it for her on her birthday. You can see more of their photos by clicking here.
